Pro Tools is definitely the best for Mac is the industry standard (sound post-production, etc.
I am a PC user and I personally like Cool Edit Pro (now Adobe Audition), but because I learned from him.
I'm sure there are many other arguments, Sound Forge or Cakewalk or something.
There are shareware versions out there. I might even be able to now Pro Tools PC.
